Alkyl Pyridines Quat (CAS 68909-18-2) is a benzyl alkylpyridinium chloride: a quaternary ammonium compound made from alkyl pyridines and benzyl chloride, supplied as about an 80% solution in methanol. It is a key active ingredient in acid corrosion inhibitors for oil and gas well acidizing. Blended into hydrochloric acid treatments, it adsorbs onto steel tubing and casing and slows acid attack at high temperature. Formulators also use it in corrosion inhibitors for production systems carrying CO₂ and H₂S. Because of the methanol, the product is a flammable, corrosive liquid (UN 2924) and ships and is stored as dangerous goods.
